The World Health Organization has published a new framework for public health action on ageing around the world, rejecting the stereotype of older people as frail and dependent. WCPT's new Executive Board gets to work

WCPT’s new Executive Board met for the first time in June, just eight weeks after their election at the WCPT General Meeting in Singapore. As well as getting down to business – establishing a finance committee and deciding to set up a membership committee – the board set the groundwork for working together in the future.  Read the full article

Quality and diversity mark final entries to the congress programme

The platform and poster sessions for the WCPT Congress this year have been announced – and there will be a massive 416 platform and 1,669 poster sessions on show in Singapore. The abstracts accepted for presentation at the congress come from all WCPT regions and cover a wide range of issues in education, global health, research, professional issues and professional practice. Regulation is a top priority, global health professional associations agree

Global leaders of the main health professions, including physical therapy, have urged their members to pay more attention to regulation issues and the need to implement the right systems to act in the public interest. Read the full article

WCPT intervenes in WHO disability discussion

The world's health ministers have endorsed an action plan to improve health for all people with a disability. At the World Health Assembly in Geneva in May, 33 member states voiced support for the resolution. Five non-governmental organisations including WCPT also stated their support for the plan at the meeting. Read the full article

Thousands attracted by massive online course for physical therapists

The first online education course to be approved by WCPT for continuing education units attracted 3,500 participants – with 1,348 completing the final evaluation and picking up WCPT’s International Physical Therapy Continuing Education Units (IPT-CEUs). Read the full article

A data collection project by WCPT has provided evidence of the stark variations in numbers of physical therapists across the world, with some countries having 1000 times more physical therapists available for their population than others. Read the full article

WCPT is trialling a new service to recognise high quality continuing education opportunities for physical therapists around the world. When fully established, the service will approve continuing education activities which meet internationally agreed standards. Read the full article

Norwegian association resists plans to make manual therapy a separate profession

The Norwegian Physiotherapist Association is resisting government moves to classify manual/manipulative therapy as a separate profession. WCPT, its European region and its subgroup the International Federation of Orthopaedic Manipulative Physical Therapists (IFOMPT) have joined with the association in officially objecting to the plan.  Read the full article
