Childhood and adolescent obesity
To mark World Obesity Day on 11th October, the World Health Organization (WHO) published a press release stating that the number of obese children and adolescents (aged five to 19 years) worldwide has risen tenfold in the past four decades. If current trends continue, more children and adolescents will be obese than moderately or severely underweight by 2022, according to a new study led by Imperial College London and WHO.

The study was published in The Lancet - it analysed weight and height measurements from nearly 130 million people aged over five years (31.5 million people aged five to 19, and 97.4 million aged 20 and older), making it the largest ever number of participants involved in an epidemiological study. More than 1000 contributors participated in the study, which looked at body mass index (BMI) and how obesity has changed worldwide from 1975 to 2016.

WCPT Congress
The website for the WCPT Congress 2019 will be launched shortly with the announcement of the members of the Congress Planning Committee, who will shape the scientific programme. In the meantime, save the date for this international event that brings together the global profession: 10 - 13 May, Geneva.

To view the proceedings from the WCPT Congress which took place earlier this year in Cape Town go to: www.wcpt.org/wcpt2017/proceedings. From here you can also access recordings of many of the focused symposia.
WCPT Governance Review
Earlier this year the Executive Board agreed to establish a project to review the governance of WCPT. It is anticipated that this will lead to the drafting of contemporary Articles of Association, which will be submitted to the WCPT General Meeting for approval in May 2019. To support and guide this work a Governance Review Expert Working Group (GR-EWG) will be formed. An open call to all member organisations was sent out in September seeking nominations and the successful candidates will be announced next month.
Cochrane Rehabilitation
The second issue of the Cochrane Rehabilitation Newsletter was recently published: bit.ly/2iyhtm7.

Linda Woodhouse (former President of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association) is the WCPT representative and physical therapist Tracey Howe, Director of the Cochrane Global Ageing Field and Member of the Cochrane Rehabilitation Executive Committee, has been elected as internal member in the Cochrane Governing Board for a term of three years

The Cochrane Rehabilitation Field can serve as a bridge between all the stakeholders in rehabilitation and Cochrane. Cochrane Rehabilitation on one side drives evidence and methods developed by Cochrane to the world of rehabilitation and on the other conveys priorities, needs and specificities of rehabilitation to Cochrane.
WCPT awards programme
Next month WCPT will be issuing a call to all member organisations with a request for nominations for the awards committee. The call for award nominations will subsequently be launched next year.

The WCPT awards programme recognises outstanding contributions by physical therapists to the profession and/or global health at an international level. There are several categories of award, all presented every four years at the time of the WCPT General Meeting. To see the 2015 WCPT award recipients go to: www.wcpt.org/awards2015.
Progress report on prevention and control of NCDs
The WHO Global Coordination Mechanism on the Prevention and Control of NCDs (GCM/NCD) Progress Report for 2014-2016 has been released: bit.ly/2h9PEx8.

The report highlights the achievements of the GCM/NCD in helping countries to achieve the nine voluntary targets of the Global Monitoring Framework and reduce the burden of NCDs and their shared risk factors, including unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity, tobacco use and harmful use of alcohol.

World Physical Therapy Day 2017 celebrated around the world
Once again, World Physical Therapy Day has been a massive success with celebrations taking place around the world and toolkit materials being translated into 11 languages.

Thank you to all WCPT member organisations and physical therapists who have sent in their reports about activities held to celebrate the day. This year's "Physical Activity for Life" message was enthusiastically taken up around the world and used as the focus of the day.

Reports showing how the day was celebrated are being added to: www.wcpt.org/wptday17

If you have not yet submitted your report please email mlockner@wcpt.org
Health workers are #NotATarget
Every day in conflict zones, doctors, nurses, ambulance drivers and first-aiders are coming under attack while trying to save lives. They are threatened, arrested or beaten, their hospitals looted or bombed. Some are unable to work because medical supplies can't get through. Some are forced to flee for their lives. Some are even killed.

In response to this, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and Red Crescent Movement have set up the Health Care in Danger initiative. Earlier this month, a video was launched with the message “We should not accept it anywhere”.

Help to raise awareness of this campaign - share the video and tell everyone that Health Workers are #NotATarget  http://bit.ly/2wSht6Z

WCPT would like to take this opportunity to remember and pay tribute to physical therapist, Lorena Enebral Pérez, an amputee rehabilitation specialist who was recently shot and killed by a patient in Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan
International Day of Older Persons
The International Day of Older Persons is celebrated every year on 1st October. For 2017 the United Nations has set the theme as “Stepping into the Future: Tapping the Talents, Contributions and Participation of Older Persons in Society.”

Get involved in the day on Twitter: follow @UN4Ageing and use the hashtag #UNIDOP for all your tweets.

WCPT pays tribute to Inger Brøndsted
WCPT is sad to announce the passing of Inger Brøndsted, who served as the WCPT Executive Committee member for the European Region (1999-2003) and WCPT Vice President (2003-07). She graduated in 1966 as a physiotherapist in Copenhagen, Denmark and was elected as President of the Danish Physiotherapy Association in 1979, a role she continued until 2000.

Global Burden of Disease
The Lancet has published a series of open access articles on the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) with the latest estimates for health trends worldwide, providing data on more than 330 diseases, causes of death, and injuries: http://thelancet.com/gbd.

The GBD is the most comprehensive worldwide observational epidemiological study to date. It describes mortality and morbidity from major diseases, injuries and risk factors to health at global, national and regional levels. Examining trends from 1990 to the present and making comparisons across populations enables understanding of the changing health challenges facing people across the world in the 21st century.
Handicap International (Vietnam) / USAID project
Following the successful implementation of the SUDA project, WCPT is once again partnering with Handicap International in a USAID funded project on advancing medical care and rehabilitation education in Vietnam.

WCPT sent a team to Vietnam earlier this month to carry out a Gap analysis. The physical therapy entry level education programmes in three universities were examined.

Vietnam currently has an approximate population of 95 million, served by approximately 4,000 physical therapists.
