WCPT President and Vice President elected at General Meeting Emma Stokes has been elected as President and Melissa Locke has been elected as Vice President of WCPT. Voting delegates from 107 WCPT member organisations took part in the election at WCPT’s General Meeting on Thursday 9th May at the Starling Hotel Geneva, Switzerland. The following regional board members have also been elected: Jean Damascene Gasherebuka (Africa Region)  Yasushi Uchiyama (Asia Western Pacific Region)  John Xerri de Caro (European Region)  Stacy de Gale (North America Caribbean) Daniel Wappenstein (South America) Read the press release.

13 new member organisations admitted to WCPT 13 physical therapy associations were admitted to WCPT at its General Meeting on 8th May 2019 in Geneva. This brings the total number of member organisations to 121. The new member organisations are the physical therapy associations from: Bhutan, Costa Rica, Georgia, Haiti, Ivory Coast, Kosovo, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, Senegal, Sudan. Physical therapists honoured at WCPT Awards Dinner Australian physical therapist Anne Moseley was awarded the Mildred Elson Award, WCPT's highest honour, for her outstanding contribution to the physical therapy profession as a clinician, teacher, and researcher and, in particular, for her leadership and commitment to the promotion of evidence-based physical therapy through the Physiotherapy Evidence Database or PEDro. Daniel Wappenstein Deller, president of the Ecuadorian Society of Physiotherapy and the coordinator of the project humanitarian support in physical therapy earthquake Ecuador 16A was presented with a WCPT Humanitarian Service Award. Christina H Opava was awarded a WCPT Leadership in Rehabilitation Award for her contribution to the professional advancement of physical therapy. She is a pioneer in the field of physical therapy and rheumatology. Lorena Enebral Perez was presented with a posthumous WCPT Humanitarian Service Award. A Spanish physical therapist, Lorena had worked as a humanitarian aid worker in Ethiopia, Malawi, Tanzania, and the Sahara. In 2016 she began working in Afghanistan where she was fatally shot in 2017 while working with a service user of the ICRC physical rehabilitation centre in Mazar-i-Sharif. WCPT International Service Awards were also awarded to: Hana I Alsobayel – Saudi Arabia Annalie Basson – South Africa Sarah Bazin – UK Aicha Benyaich – Belgium Jennifer M Bottomley – USA Gill Brook – UK Charlotte Hager – Sweden Alice Jones – Hong Kong Shunsuke Kudo – Japan Brenda Myers – UK Guy Simoneau – Canada Read the press release Biographies for all award recipients and photographs from the WCPT Awards Dinner will be available on the WCPT website shortly.

New WCPT policies approved at General Meeting The following were approved at WCPT's General Meeting: WCPT Policy Statement: Diversity and Inclusion WCPT endorsement: The Ethical Principles of Health Care in Times of Armed Conflict and Other Emergencies See the full list of WCPT policies WCPT's policy statements set out its agreed stance or opinion on a range of topics. They are important tools for informing health and social policy around the world, and furthering the development of the profession and service delivery.

New open access journal This month saw the publication of the first issue of The Lancet Digital Health, an open access journal in the Lancet family. It is committed to publishing high-quality original research, comment, and correspondence contributing to promoting digital technologies in health practice worldwide. Access the first issue

Dance rehabilitation brings health benefits The ability dance has to unveil a passion for movement, joy, socialisation, and boost activity levels was best described by Kara Patterson, from Canada and the chair of the Dance Rehabilitation seminar. Call for committee members for WCPT Congress 2021 If you've enjoyed WCPT Congress 2019, why not apply to be part of the WCPT Congress Programme Committee (CPC) and help develop the programme for WCPT Congress 2021 in Dubai? WCPT Congress 2021 will take place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from 8-10 April 2021. CPC members must be able to serve from July 2019 until the end of the congress evaluation period in 2021. They will be expected to join a face-to-face meeting in September 2019 to start preparations for the WCPT Congress 2021. The provisional dates for this meeting are 7/8 or 28/29 September. Voto unânime das organizações membros da WCPT para nova Constituição

Delegados votantes de  106 delegações (Associações Nacionais de Fisioterapeutas) votaram por unanimidade uma nova Constituição para a Confederação Mundial de Fisioterapia WCPT.

 

A votação ocorreu no dia 9 de maio de 2019, o segundo dia da Reunião Geral da WCPT no Starling Hotel Geneva, Suiça.

Other business at the General Meeting included:

• approval of a motion on climate change proposed by the Japanese Physical Therapy Association
• approval of a policy statement on diversity and inclusion
• endorsement of ethical principles of health care in times of armed conflict and other emergencies
• confirmation of awards recognising the contribution of individual physical therapists to the global profession and to WCPT
• election of President, Vice President, Regional Board members.

Three new WCPT subgroups were also approved:

• International Organisation of Aquatic Physical Therapists (IOAPT)
• International Federation of Physical Therapists working in Occupational Health and Ergonomics (IFPTOHE)
• International Physical Therapy for HIV/AIDS, Oncology, Hospice and Palliative Care (IPT-HOPE).

Theo Ruitenbeek, IPT-HOPE board member, said: ‘We are grateful and proud to be acknowledged and recognised by WCPT member organisations at the General Meeting. Our mission is to advance physical therapy management and prevention for people affected by oncology, palliative care, and HIV/AIDS throughout the world and across cultural groups.

‘Now we can spread out this mission among all WCPT’s member organisations. We hope WCPT’s member organisations will join us in this important area of work and help make a difference to people’s lives.’

The WCPT General Meeting took place on 8 and 9 May. The WCPT General Meeting takes place every four years. The next General Meeting will take place in Tokyo, Japan, in 2023.

Emma Stokes foi eleita Presidente e Melissa Locke foi eleita Vice-presidente da Confederação Mundial de Fisioterapia (WCPT).

Delegados votantes de 107 organizações membros da WCPT participaram das eleições na Assembleia Geral da WCPT na quinta-feira, 9 de maio, no Starling Hotel Geneva, na Suíça.

Emma Stokes has been elected as President and Melissa Locke has been elected as Vice President of the World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT).
Voting delegates from 107 WCPT member organisations took part in the election at WCPT’s General Meeting on Thursday 9 May at the Starling Hotel Geneva, Switzerland.

There were three candidates for the position of Vice President: Alain Belanger, Melissa Locke, John Xerri de Caro. In line with WCPT’s Articles of Association, any candidate who is unsuccessful in the election for President may put themselves forward for election as Vice President. After two rounds of voting, Melissa Locke was elected.
