WCPT Eupdate
WCPT E-Update: #PPE4PT campaign launches
Atualização eletrônica do Informativo WCPT: lançamento da campanha
 # PPE4PT

WCPT launches advocacy campaign in support of access to PPE
Physiotherapists have a critical role to play in maintaining the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities around the world during the coronavirus pandemic.

But many physiotherapists, like their colleagues in other healthcare roles, are being placed in unacceptable risk because they are not being provided with the correct personal protective equipment they need to do their jobs.

To help address this WCPT is launching a #PPE4PT campaign pack, with materials in English, French, and Spanish:
  • factsheets about airborne protection, droplet protection and recommendations for physiotherapists
  • videos with subtitles
  • advocacy toolkit
  • letter addressed to government health ministers for use by WCPT member organisations
These can all be used to support physiotherapists in different countries and raise the profile of physiotherapists and their role in the response to COVID-19.

https://www.wcpt.org/wcpt2021

Surveys reveal global state of the physical therapy profession

Responses to the latest World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT) survey reveal a significant rise in the number of physical therapists who are members of their national organsiation.

WCPT publishes data from its member organisations every year on a range of issues, including professional regulation, practice, education, and the number of employed physical therapists. This data provides a comprehensive and valuable global profile of the profession.

The most recent data is based on surveys completed by 105 of WCPT’s 120 member organisations in mid-2019. The high response rate, 87.5%, demonstrates strong engagement between WCPT and its member organisations and data reliability. The data gives a global snapshot of the physical therapy profession across the world, showing variations in the density of physical therapists in different countries and between WCPT regions. Highlights of the 2019 data include:

70% of respondents said membership of their organisation had increased
58% of respondents said there was direct access in their country and people could refer themselves to a physical therapist without a referral
81% of respondents said there was no law preventing private practice in their country
globally, 66% of physical therapists are women – in three countries (Hungary, Myanmar, St Lucia) at least 90% of physical therapists are women

WCPT Chief Executive Jonathon Kruger said: ‘The responses to the surveys from our member organisations continue to provide rich and valuable international comparisons which WCPT and its members can use to influence policy decisions around health, health service delivery, human resource planning, and education.’

The country profile maps allow people to see how the global profession has evolved since 2013. The maps are an interactive resource that can be printed or downloaded, and can be accessed here.

Feedback from WCPT member organisations has been overwhelmingly positive:

‘We have been able to increase our membership in 2018 by involving physiotherapists in all our activities. We make sure we ask for their help and include their point of view in everything we do.’
Société Haïtienne de Physiothérapie

‘The growth in membership is an indicator of success. We believe this gain has come from the trust our members have in the role of Emirates Physiotherapy Society, how we support our members’ professional development and meet their expectations.’
Emirates Physiotherapy Society

We believe the primary reason for the increase in membership is due to the many events we have organized and participated, giving our association more visibility and making it stronger. We have also offered discounts to people who have attended our training courses to be part of our association. We are truly grateful for the help of the WCPT in this endeavor, and we are convinced that the future statistical data will be very valuable to us.’
Asociación Española de Fisioterapeutas

World Physical Therapy Day 2017 celebrated around the world
Once again, World Physical Therapy Day has been a massive success with celebrations taking place around the world and toolkit materials being translated into 11 languages.

Thank you to all WCPT member organisations and physical therapists who have sent in their reports about activities held to celebrate the day. This year's "Physical Activity for Life" message was enthusiastically taken up around the world and used as the focus of the day.

Reports showing how the day was celebrated are being added to: www.wcpt.org/wptday17

If you have not yet submitted your report please email mlockner@wcpt.org
Health workers are #NotATarget
Every day in conflict zones, doctors, nurses, ambulance drivers and first-aiders are coming under attack while trying to save lives. They are threatened, arrested or beaten, their hospitals looted or bombed. Some are unable to work because medical supplies can't get through. Some are forced to flee for their lives. Some are even killed.

In response to this, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and Red Crescent Movement have set up the Health Care in Danger initiative. Earlier this month, a video was launched with the message “We should not accept it anywhere”.

Help to raise awareness of this campaign - share the video and tell everyone that Health Workers are #NotATarget  http://bit.ly/2wSht6Z

WCPT would like to take this opportunity to remember and pay tribute to physical therapist, Lorena Enebral Pérez, an amputee rehabilitation specialist who was recently shot and killed by a patient in Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan
International Day of Older Persons
The International Day of Older Persons is celebrated every year on 1st October. For 2017 the United Nations has set the theme as “Stepping into the Future: Tapping the Talents, Contributions and Participation of Older Persons in Society.”

WCPT pays tribute to Inger Brøndsted
WCPT is sad to announce the passing of Inger Brøndsted, who served as the WCPT Executive Committee member for the European Region (1999-2003) and WCPT Vice President (2003-07). She graduated in 1966 as a physiotherapist in Copenhagen, Denmark and was elected as President of the Danish Physiotherapy Association in 1979, a role she continued until 2000.

Global Burden of Disease
The Lancet has published a series of open access articles on the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) with the latest estimates for health trends worldwide, providing data on more than 330 diseases, causes of death, and injuries: http://thelancet.com/gbd.

The GBD is the most comprehensive worldwide observational epidemiological study to date. It describes mortality and morbidity from major diseases, injuries and risk factors to health at global, national and regional levels. Examining trends from 1990 to the present and making comparisons across populations enables understanding of the changing health challenges facing people across the world in the 21st century.
Handicap International (Vietnam) / USAID project
Following the successful implementation of the SUDA project, WCPT is once again partnering with Handicap International in a USAID funded project on advancing medical care and rehabilitation education in Vietnam.

WCPT sent a team to Vietnam earlier this month to carry out a Gap analysis. The physical therapy entry level education programmes in three universities were examined.

Vietnam currently has an approximate population of 95 million, served by approximately 4,000 physical therapists.
International conference on health professional regulation
The fifth World Health Professions Regulation Conference is scheduled to take place immediately before the World Health Organization’s World Health Assembly in Geneva on 19-20 May 2018. It will provide participants with insights, perspectives and discussion on current challenges in health professional regulation.
Key speakers will explore the lessons learned from competence-based approaches to regulation, compare regulatory models and examine ways of promoting best practice in regulatory governance and performance.
