WHO director general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, speaks at the congress opening session
Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO director general, thanked physiotherapists for the essential role they played during the pandemic in his keynote address at the opening session for World Physiotherapy Congress 2021 online on 9 April 2021.

He shared his “sincere gratitude” for the critical role physiotherapists had played, and were continuing to play, in intensive care settings and vaccination programmes, and providing rehabilitation for people living with Long Covid.

Dr Tedros said: ”One in three people will need rehabilitation at some point in their life. Too often these needs go unmet. As we build back better from the pandemic, it is critical that rehabilitation is recognised as the key to living a long, healthy life.”

Equality, equity, diversity and inclusion addressed
Several sessions in first day of congress covered the role of equality, equity, diversity and inclusion in global health.

In a World Physiotherapy seminar, Emma Stokes described how the organisation continues to evolve its role in equality, equity, diversity and inclusion leadership and how it has continued to harness opportunities for unity and growth within the profession. The session was extremely well received by participants. One person commented: "I'm appreciating how thought provoking this session is. It is enlightening and at the same time challenging in terms of actually practising equality and diversity in our profession".

A focused symposium on refugee and migrant health was chaired by Emer McGowan and presented the experiences and perspectives of physiotherapists who work with displaced populations and people who are migrant workers. She was joined by speakers Joanne Kibet, Hernan C Labao, Lori Maria Walton, and Joost Van Wijchen.

The topic of oppression, marginalisation and stigma was the focus of an insightful and interactive discussion session where the panel explored examples of these related to obesity, disability, race, culture, gender disparities and domestic violence. The session was chaired by Hana Alsobayel and Stacy de Gale, with speakers Susan Walker, Tracy Blake, and Tine Kovacic joining them.

Realising the Rehabilitation2030 initiative in low and middle income countries
Pauline Kleinitz chaired a seminar on the ‘how-to’ of national rehabilitation plans: starting, developing, acting and evaluating.

The seminar highlighted progress in low and middle income countries towards realising the Rehabilitation2030 initiative. It focused on how to get started, develop, implement, monitor and evaluate a national rehabilitation strategic plan. The presenters, from countries in the Africa, South Asia and Middle Eastern regions, representing government, practitioners, professional associations and international development agencies, shared short summaries of actions undertaken, lessons learnt, and progress made.
