World Physiotherapy gains three new member organisations

Membership of World Physiotherapy for the three new member organisations took effect from 1 January 2021. The total number of World Physiotherapy member organisations is now 125, representing more than 660,000 physiotherapists around the world.

World Physiotherapy pays tribute to Sandra Mercer-Moore

Last week World Physiotherapy learned of the death of Sandra Mercer-Moore, a world leader in physiotherapy who helped lay the foundations for the growth in our membership and our regions.

Sandra was president of the World Confederation for Physical Therapy (now known as World Physiotherapy) from 1999-2007. Under her presidency, the organisation launched its first website in 2001 and membership reached 100 member organisations.

She was a member of the Australian Physiotherapy Association for 57 years and the association’s national president from 1991-1992. She was awarded Member of the Order of Australia for services to physiotherapy.

WHPA calls for support and action for health professionals in video message

The World Health Professions Alliance (WHPA) has called for continued support and real action to support health professionals and other health and care workers in 2021.

The presidents of the five organisations that make up the WHPA, representing 34 million health professionals globally, marked the start of the Year of the Health and Care Workers with a call for concrete action to help safeguard underfunded, COVID-affected health systems. The WHPA call was issued as a video message from the five presidents when the 148th WHO executive board met on 18 January 2021.

PEDro adds three new languages to website

The PEDro website is now available in Polish, Romanian, and Ukrainian.
This enhancement means PEDro has 16 language sections: Arabic, simplified Chinese, traditional Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Spanish, Tamil, Turkish, and Ukrainian. bit.ly/2YfaWyj

APTA celebrates 100th anniversary

The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) celebrated its 100th anniversary this month.

Founded in 1921, it opened its new national headquarters to mark the occasion on Friday 15 January 2021.

The APTA was one of the 11 national physiotherapy associations to found the World Confederation for Physical Therapy, now known as World Physiotherapy.

Updated WHO guideline on COVID-19 management

The World Health Organization (WHO) has published an updated guideline titled 'Clinical management of COVID-19: living guidance'.

It provides recommendations that can be applied when caring for patients during the COVID-19 care pathway, and now also also includes Best Practice Statement on caring for COVID-19 patients after their acute illness, along with five new recommendations.
